I really love this time of year. The great feelings from the holiday time you spent with family still linger while the excitement of a new beginning rushes in. It’s always been a time to reflect on the past year and to resolve that the year ahead will be one of productivity and growth. (Or loss if your goals include watching your weight!) This year, I hope we all see growth and prosperity in all that we pursue.
The excitement of new beginnings is not lost on Spartanburg County. This past week our new administrator, Katherine Hubbard, came on board and hit the ground running. We all have great expectations for Katherine and her ability to see things in a fresh new light. I encourage everyone to take an opportunity to speak with her and welcome her to Spartanburg.
Recently I read the updates I’ve given over the last year. Wow! What a year we’ve had! We The People have certainly been busy. Although much of the work seemed to center around cleaning the fridge, my belief is that this year will be a time of productive, forward looking change.
CORRECTIVE ACTION TEAM
Many of the changes we made last year are poised to really move us forward this year. The Corrective Action Team for instance, exposed areas where we were far
behind our neighboring counties in terms of our service. An action plan was completed and physical work is now being done to not only bring us up to where we need to be, but also to put us in a position to expand in the future when needed. When prioritizing our spending, these services that we are required by law to provide should be near the top. For far too long they have not been -That is until now.
PARKS AND RECREATION
The Parks Department is another area that many will see some very promising changes. There are reports detailing the new structure, but the bottom line is that we will have a very streamlined parks system that will be maintained to very high safety and appearance requirements. In the next month or two, you will see some great changes taking place in this area. We hope that you will take notice and let me know what you think. We are truly looking to run a world class park system within the budget that we have. All input will certainly be appreciated.
As most of you know, we had a great year of economic recruitment in 2011. That means that 2012 will start to show actual jobs being filled either in expansions or in in-fills or even in new construction of incoming businesses. We obviously have much more work to do in this area, but we are making good progress and will not slow down until everyone in Spartanburg that wants a job, has one. (Even then we’ll keep at it). There is no doubt that we know what a jewel we have in Spartanburg, but we’re going to continue to get that word out to the rest of the world.
