As many of you know, I'm a big fan of We, The People. In today's society it really is heart breaking to see so many dependent on the government for seemingly everything. That is why I've decided to try and recognize some real everyday patriots: The people that see a need in their community and do something about it - without waiting for the government to come to the rescue.
My first group is the Spartanburg Men's Garden Club. Thirty-five years ago, this group of men (and some women) under the direction of men such as Henry Pittman took it upon themselves to start planting over 5000 trees in the city and county of Spartanburg. Within the past year of so they have started an effort in conjunction with the Tree Coalition to go back and clean up some of these older sites. I was fortunate to have a tour of some of these areas and the before and after results are nothing short of amazing.
Team Captain Charlie Covert (Creekside Nursery) along with Dr. Bob Reynolds, Charlie Crescenzi, Buddy Waters and others plan to have several more of the "Trees Parties" within the next year - complete with education and training about how to keep these areas looking great for generations to come. So the next time you see some well landscaped mature trees around town in Spartanburg, thank these guys for stepping up! If you want to help with this effort, please contact the SMGC directly. I'm sure they would welcome the help!
