This is the government edition of Everyday Patriots where I'd like to recognize some of our employees of Spartanburg County. These patriots have excelled at their jobs or have gone over and above to provide exceptional customer service to the citizens of Spartanburg.
Quick action on the part of a youth recreation staff member Sharon “Shane” Kent helped save a child from choking. The child, an ACE (After-Class Enrichment) participant was eating a sucker when the candy became separated from the stick causing her to choke. Shane immediately sprung into action and successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver. Several parents contacted Elizabeth Hardee, Shane’s supervisor, to share their appreciation for Shane and how well she handled this serious situation. Shane Kent has been an employee of the Parks Department since January 2009 and has attained first aid & CPR certification annually. Training is mandatory for all staff working in youth recreation so that staff are adequately prepared should an incident occur.
I want to recognize Michael Sapp, an 8 year-veteran of the Spartanburg Parks Department. Michael recently took the lead in organizing the Men’s Class C Southern National Championship. As a result of his outstanding work, the Parks Department has been recognized with the James Farrell Award of Excellence by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA). This award is given for excellence in conducting ASA National Championships. The ASA sponsored a National Championship that brought 300 participants and their families to Spartanburg over Labor Day Weekend. The ASA representatives and participants in the Men’s Class C Southern National Championship rated the tournament experience on several factors and the tournament received a rating of 95 out of 100. In addition to Spartanburg, communities receiving the award this year included: Bakersfield, California; LaPlata, Maryland; Lawton, Oklahoma ; Reno/Sparks, Nevada; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Spokane, Washington; Tallahassee, Florida; Rolla, Missouri and Sterling, Virginia.
Thanks to these employees - two great examples of customer service in action. Keep up the good work!!
